Edith Katiji-Mjanana (31) is glad she took her one-year-old son, Mudiwa Farai for immunisation during the Child Health Days (CHD) and National Immunisation Days (NIDS) from 24 May to 2 June 2010.

Although Mudiwa has received routine immunisation against most ailments that affect children, as recommended by health care workers, Edith still felt it was necessary to participate in the campaign. Zimbabwe is experiencing a measles outbreak that began in September 2009.

No Woman Should Die While Giving Life! PDF Print E-mail

At the time of going to print, Zimbabwe was well on the way to preparing for the launch of the Campaign on Accelerated reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa (CARMMA) in Chivi District, Masvingo, on June 30th. Maternal, Infant and Child morbidity and mortality in Zimbabwe is an emergency requiring immediate action and full commitment from government. The Zimbabwe Maternal and Perinatal Mortality Study conducted by the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare (MOHCW) in 2007 established a maternal mortality ratio (MMR) of 725 deaths per 100,000 live births. Not far behind is the perinatal mortality rate of 29 per 1,000 births; figures which will surely prevent the country from attaining MDGs 4 and 5 to which the country is a signatory, unless urgent action and political will and commitment is strengthened.
