To support the Public Health System in Zimbabwe through:
study of the disease situation and trends (communicable and non-communicable diseases).
study of the health services situation and trends (utilisation, coverage and quality).
the establishment of a national applied epidemiological system and services.
the establishment of national endemic and epidemic disease control systems (communicable and non-communicable disease control programmes).

Responsibilities
This department is responsible for the co-ordination of the prevention and control of epidemics, communicable and non-communicable diseases Its other core responsibilities include diseases surveillance and program monitoring and evaluation. The department is responsible for:
establishing and maintaining comprehensive national disease control strategies and systems for communicable and non-communicable diseases.
co-ordinating the development of technical and training guidelines/manuals for the management and control of both communicable and non-communicable diseases.
providing an early warning system for epidemic diseases, epidemic preparedness and early response and effective surveillance of epidemics.
co-ordinating the collection, compilation, analysis, communication, transmission and presentation of health information for decision making.
monitoring disease trends, health indicators and associated health service trends.
developing and supporting medical records systems to facilitate hospital patient management.
developing modern health informatics and telematics systems.
co-ordinating the training of health workers in applied epidemiology and disease control strategies.
commissioning relevant research in areas of both communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Malaria Control
Schistosomiasis Control
Tuberculosis/Leprosy
Zoonotic Diseases (Rabies, Anthrax and Plague)
Other epidemic prone diseases: Dysentery and Cholera.
Non-Communicable Diseases Control Unit
Its main responsibilities are for:
Prevention of Blindness Program
Cancer Control Program/Cancer Registry
Injury Prevention and Control Program
Chronic Diseases.
Schistosomiasis Control
