WEEKLY DISEASE SURVEILLANCE UPDATE

WEEK 3, ENDING 23 JANUARY 2011.

COMPLETENESS AND TIMELINESS

National completeness increased from 65% to 72% whilst timeliness increased from 48% to 57%.

CHOLERA

Fifteen cholera cases of Week 2 were reported late from Bikita (13) and Gweru (2) and 3 cases from Gweru were reported in Week 3.  

Cumulative cholera figures since the outbreak began last year on 5 February are 1 063 suspected cases, 145 confirmed cases and 23 deaths.  

COMMON DIARRHOEA

The total diarrhoea cases reported this week were

4 432 and 2 deaths (CFR 0.04%). Of the reported cases          2 157 (48.6%) and the deaths were under the age of five years.  The deaths were from Rushinga, Mashonaland Central (1) and Kwekwe, Midland 1) . The provinces which reported the largest numbers of diarrhoea are Mashonaland East (803) and Mashonaland Central (658). The cumulative figures for diarrhoea are 12 646 cases and 11 deaths

(CFR 0.08%) 

DYSENTERY

Clinical dysentery cases reported this week were 503 and no deaths. The provinces which reported the largest numbers of dysentery cases are Mashonaland Central (118) and Manicaland (96). The cumulative figure for dysentery is 1 440 cases.

MALARIA

A total of 4 906 malaria cases and 20 deaths were reported this week (CFR 0.4%). Out of the cases reported 884 (18 %) and 3 deaths were under the age of five years (CFR 0.37%).

The highest numbers were reported from Manicaland (2 759) and Mashonaland West (683).

All provinces are being reminded to investigate all malaria deaths. 

ANTHRAX

Three cases of anthrax were reported from Chipinge, Manicaland (2) and Mwenezi, Masvingo (1) this week. The cumulative figure is now 12. 

DOG BITES

A total of 162 cases of dog bites were reported this week of which seven (7) were inflicted by vaccinated dogs. Vaccination status of the remaining 155 dogs was unknown. The provinces which reported the largest number of dog bites were Masvingo (30) and Manicaland (24) The cumulative figure is 302 cases.

Snake Bites

Fifty-eight (58) cases of snake bites were reported this week. The cumulative figure is 128.

INFLUENZA

A total of 936 influenza cases were reported this week .The provinces which reported the largest number of influenza cases were Mat North (478) and Manicaland (231). The cumulative figure is 2 486 cases.

PANDEMIC INFLUENZA A (H1N1)

No cases of Pandemic Influenza A (H1N1) were reported this week.

All provinces, City health and Central Hospitals are advised to be on alert by involving clinicians and laboratories so that swift action is taken. This includes, for example, treatment of cases and contact tracing.

RABIES

One rabies death was reported from Chitungwiza Central Hospital this week. Cumulative figure is one death.  

PLAGUE

No suspected cases of plague were reported.

MEASLES

Forty-five suspected cases of measles were reported this week. Highest cases were reported from Harare city (20), and Manicaland (13), through the Weekly Disease Surveillance System (WDSS).  

AFP/Poliomyelitis

No suspected cases of AFP were reported. 

NNT

No NNT cases were reported.  

MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS

No meningococcal meningitis cases were reported this week.
