PUBLIC RELATIONS UNIT

Mission
To promote and enhance mutual understanding with internal and external publics by implementing planned and effective communication strategies, complaints handling procedures and issues management programmes to facilitate and support the attainment of the highest level of health delivery.

Objectives
The unit undertakes to:

  • Respond to appropriate public complaints, queries and enquiries as soon as possible. Respond to media and organisations enquiries within one month.
  • Be pro-active in facilitating dissemination of critical health information to the general public, media and other organisations.
  • Facilitate strengthening of public relations functions in Provincial Medical Directorates, Central Hospitals, Provincial Hospitals, district hospitals and help establish Public Relations focal structures at health facilities where these do not exist.
  • Strengthen networking of Ministry of Health and Child Welfare departments, units and institutions for effective delivery of health services.
  • Strengthen networking with other arms of government, organisations, institutions and the private sector to enhance and facilitate a multi-sectoral approach in dealing with health issues.
  • Encourage and facilitate training or orienting health workers on sound public relations and clients care practices to improve quality of service delivery.
  • Advising management on outside opinion about Ministry of Health and Child Welfare by responding to public enquiries and complaints.

Activities

  • Establishing and maintaining the correct image of the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare by responding to public enquiries and complaints.
  • Write press releases, fact sheets, feature stories, background information on health subjects of concern to the public in liaison with institutions.
  • Monitoring outside opinion and the corporate reputation of Ministry of Health and Child Welfare and advising management accordingly.
  • Informing the public about policies, activities and services of Ministry of Health and Child Welfare.
  • Advising management on communication problems, solutions and techniques both internal and external.
  • Facilitate activities and development of public information products such as brochures, posters, and audio visual materials for public relations purposes.
  • Work with the media to increase coverage of health issues and strengthen journalists knowledge of health matters.
  • Preparation of specific PR programme in liaison with heads of departments, units, health facilities and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Organise training and orientations for health workers on effective public relations and clients care practices.
